This affects work productivity when wrongly applied in management. Therefore, discipline is an important management factor to help personnel have stable work, and achieve the set goals. But businesses should not be too strict when applying discipline, because it will easily lead to “dictatorship” that makes employees tired, and quit.

3. Should motivation or discipline in the organization be prioritized?

Obviously, we can see that motivation is intrinsically an unstable emotion of personnel, and when it has a negative impact, it will affect emotions and work in the long run. This is considered a lack of permanence for an organization that wants to grow sustainably.

As for discipline, it takes time to train and support employees to build this character and in the long run, it will be better.

For example, when a business applies cash bonuses or long trips to employees who achieve the sale goal of the year, the employee will be very excited and want to contribute more. But in the future, when they do not achieve sales goals, it is likely to lead to job dissatisfaction, to leave the position because they do not receive rewards from the business. This type of motivation lacks the persistence and assurance of employees, easily causing damage to the company.

In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins says discipline is not about forcing others to perform a behavior or to follow specific rules. Instead, it’s about creating systems and processes that employees need to follow and that motivate them to do so. The highest realm of discipline is that employees voluntarily follow the discipline. Companies should train employees to be disciplined first so that they can maintain their work ethic. Despite failures, they will learn perseverance over time.

In addition, businesses should combine motivating employees such as rewarding, or promoting to stimulate work morale even more. Thus, personnel will be more engaged and generate more positive energy.

In short, discipline and motivation are two core elements in human resource management and are sharp weapons to help businesses improve employee morale. When businesses can combine these two forms in management, the scale will grow steadily.
