Methods to foster employees’ culture of creativity and innovation

June 30, 2021

The creativity of employees is encouraged by leaders to contribute to the innovation of the business. However, it’s not easy to do that because the business must have a strategy to promote the culture of creativity and innovation. In this article, BEMO will help businesses stimulate ideas from employees using the 5 methods below.

1. Tell stories that involve creativity

To strengthen employees’ creativity, leaders should share stories about how large corporations or business partners succeed in innovation.

Creativity

However, to achieve the most effectiveness of these stories, you should have three questions in mind:

  • Is this story meaningful and necessary for the current team?
  • What message do you want to convey from the story?
  • What aspects of the story can stimulate employees to think creatively and innovatively?

You should only share stories with a common message to motivate employees to change and bring out more creative ideas for the organization. Also,  you should use positive words when communicating as this will create an exciting atmosphere for employees.

Large companies in the world such as Facebook, Google, Apple, or Microsoft, etc. have proven to the world that many successful products and services have been derived from the creative ideas of their employees.

2. Encourage employees to share about innovation

Holding meetings with employees is a way to switch them from creative thinking to action to put it into practice. As a result, leaders may request to hold short talks for about 30 minutes with all internal members. Let them freely discuss whether the upcoming changes are appropriate, or if they have any new ideas that are satisfied with the organization’s innovation?

Using this method shall inspire and motivate employees to come up with ideas to contribute to refresh the organization. Notably, the leader must play the role of a listener and also a morale booster in the meetings for employees to actively give ideas..

3. Learn from mistakes

Increase creativity

Admitting mistakes and learning from them will help the business expand. For example, in the case of Michael Alter – president of the online financial calculation service Sure Payroll, he took advantage of mistakes at work as a strength in management strategy. Specifically, Michael motivated employees to be creative by having them point out mistakes in the organization through the “Best New Mistakes” contest in which employees must point out new and surprising flaws in the business to win.

By using this method, Michael made employees actively think creatively to come up with what needed to be innovated and used existing resources to improve.

4. Commit to invest in employees’ ideas

Employees will be more willing to engage in innovation activities when the business itself makes a commitment to invest in their viable proposals. For example, when they come up with an idea to apply new technology to business processes with clear presentations and budgets, businesses should have a commitment to invest instead of “just watching” for a while and put it into oblivion. Doing this will motivate many other employees in the organization to give new ideas and suggestions to improve the business.

5. Give public recognition

When an employee’s contribution is valuable to the business, leaders should offer a public reward to appreciate them as well as convey a message that everyone can be appreciated too. This is the motivation to encourage employees to demonstrate their creativity.

Above are methods to increase creativity and innovation for employees that businesses can refer to. Hope this article brings useful information to strengthen the ability to develop creative thinking of employees.
